Recently, in a Freshmen Independent Research seminar on The Anthropology of Perfection, we were supposed to be discussing Taoism, but ended up in the deep end of the Heart of Plato’s Republic:

“… The instrument of knowledge can only by the movement of the whole soul be turned from the world of becoming into that of being, and learn by degrees to endure the sight of being, and of the brightest and best of being, or in other words, of the good. [Italics added]

From Wikipedia

Johann Christoph Friedrich von Schiller [ˈjoːhan ˈkʁɪstɔf ˈfʁiːdʁɪç fɔn ˈʃɪlɐ] (10 November 1759 – 9 May 1805) was a German poet, philosopher, historian, and playwright. During the last seventeen years of his life (1788–1805), Schiller struck up a productive, if complicated, friendship with already famous and influential Johann Wolfgang von Goethe. They frequently discussed issues concerning aesthetics, and Schiller encouraged Goethe to finish works he left as sketches. This relationship and these discussions led to a period now referred to as Weimar Classicism. They also worked together on Xenien, a collection of short satirical poems in which both Schiller and Goethe challenge opponents to their philosophical vision.

Ludwig van Beethoven said that a great poem is more difficult to set to music than a merely good one because the composer must rise higher than the poet – “who can do that in the case of Schiller? In this respect Goethe is much easier,” wrote Beethoven.[18]

There are relatively few famous musical settings of Schiller’s poems. Two notable exceptions are Beethoven’s setting of “An die Freude” (Ode to Joy)[13] in the final movement of his Ninth Symphony, and Johannes Brahms‘ choral setting of “Nänie“. In addition, several poems were set by Franz Schubert as Lieder, such as “Die Bürgschaft“, mostly for voice and piano. In 2005 Graham Waterhouse set Der Handschuh (The Glove) for cello and speaking voice.

From Wikipedia

“Ode to Joy” (German: “Ode an die Freude”, first line: “Freude, schöner Götterfunken”) is an ode written in 1785 by the German poet, playwright and historian Friedrich Schiller, enthusiastically celebrating the brotherhood and unity of all mankind. Despite the lasting popularity of the ode, Schiller himself regarded it as a failure later in his life, going so far as calling it “detached from reality” and “of value maybe for us two, but not for the world, nor for the art of poetry” in a letter to his long-time friend and patron Körner (whose friendship had originally inspired him to write the ode) that he wrote in the year 1800.

The ode is best known for its musical setting in D major by Ludwig van Beethoven in the final movement of his Ninth Symphony (completed in 1824), a choral symphony for orchestra, four solo voices and choir.

O friends, not these sounds!
Let us strike up something more
pleasant, full of gladness.

Joy, beautiful divine spark,
Daughter of Elysium,
We enter, drunk with fire,
O heavenly one, your holy shrine.
Your magic once again bonds together
What custom strictly divided,
All Mankind become brothers
Where your gentle wings hold sway.

He who has the great good fortune
To be friend to a friend,
He who has won a dear wife,
Let him mix his rejoicing with ours!
Yes–and whoever has but one soul
Somewhere in the world to call his own!
And he who cannot, let him steal away,
Weeping, out of this company.

Joy is drunk by every creature
From Nature’s breast;
Every good one, every bad one
Follows her rosy pathway.
She gave us kisses, and wine,
And one friend, tried unto death;
Even to the worm ecstasy is given,
and the cherub stands before God.

Gladly, as his Suns fly through
The magnificent plan of the heavens,
Run, my brothers, your own course
Joyfully, like a hero off to conquest.

Joy, beautiful divine spark, etc.

Let me embrace you, O millions!
This kiss is for the whole world!
Brothers, above the starry firmament
A loving Father must surely dwell.
Do you fall down, O millions?
Are you aware of your Creator, world?
Seek Him above the starry firmament!
For above the stars He must dwell.

It was first published in 1911 by The Presbyterian Hymnal.[2] Van Dyke wrote of this hymn:

These verses are simple expressions of common Christian feelings and desires in this present time—hymns of today that may be sung together by people who know the thought of the age, and are not afraid that any truth of science will destroy religion, or any revolution on earth overthrow the kingdom of heaven. Therefore this is a hymn of trust and joy and hope.

Joyful, joyful, we adore Thee, God of glory, Lord of love;
Hearts unfold like flowers before Thee, opening to the sun above.
Melt the clouds of sin and sadness; drive the dark of doubt away;
Giver of immortal gladness, fill us with the light of day!

All Thy works with joy surround Thee, earth and heaven reflect Thy rays,
Stars and angels sing around Thee, center of unbroken praise.
Field and forest, vale and mountain, flowery meadow, flashing sea,
Singing (sometimes chanting) bird and flowing fountain call us to rejoice in Thee.

Thou art giving and forgiving, ever blessing, ever blessed,
Wellspring of the joy of living, ocean depth of happy rest!
Thou our Father, Christ our Brother, all who live in love are Thine;
Teach us how to love each other, lift us to the joy divine.

Mortals, join the happy chorus, which the morning stars began;
Father love is reigning o’er us, brother love binds man to man.
Ever singing, march we onward, victors in the midst of strife,
Joyful music leads us Sunward in the triumph song of life.[3]

A dollar seems pretty worthless. It is just a green piece of paper with which you cannot even buy a single hotdog. Then, would you believe the fact that more than 1.3 billion people in this world live on less than $1 per day (Sachs “Can…” 56)? In other words, approximately one-sixth of the people on this planet struggle for adequate nutrition, sanitized drinking water, safe shelter, and basic health care.
“Live Slow” — by Park KeeRyun (A revision…) When I first thought to write this quote, I was having a very stressful and tiring day at the time. A lot of homework projects were due that day and I had gone to sleep late, the night before. Life was harsh for me at the time. So when I was pondering about writing a quote, I started to think about how should I live. It felt like I was not independent or free, in terms of my life; but rather, the homework assignments and quizzes were harshly controlling me.

Then the idea “live slow” came to my mind. If I could live more slow, with a more relaxed attitude, I would be able to finish more things with accuracy and be less stressed out. Also, with that kind of attitude, this slower living would allow me to think more sincerely about my future, and about my life, and about many other things–instead of just thinking about studying and worrying about the next test score.

To me, although making up that quote was something that just happened unexpectedly, it affected me unexpectedly, too; and I think that this quote can be helpful to anyone…. More of Park KeeRyun — “One Who Values Morals Highly”

眞(Jin) has several meanings: real, truth, essence

I like this word 眞 because 眞 is ultimate concept that a person could understand. It does not only explains all the things happen around us, but also the all the things happen in this world. It’s the ultimate truth itself that links the whole universe. The ultimate goal of studying is to understand the 眞.

If I could understand 眞 then I would live satisfied life as I understand the meaning of life and the world. I won’t suffer of being afraid or terrified of not knowing the truth as I could understand the world itself. My dream is to find and understand 眞 as I would live a better life, a life with no hypocrisy. These are the reasons why my favorite word is 眞.

When I feel my life is out of control, I bake. Unlike life, ingredients are very honest and predictable. Baking powder ensures air holes, milk moisture, butter richness, and sugar sweetness. I prepare the exact ingredients and follow the precise guideline, and then I know I’ll succeed. The batter next door does not interfere out of jealousy or hatred, and batters don’t go depressed or enervated.
A few days ago, in Western Philosophy class, as we were on the chapter “The Rise of Science,” a sudden heated, yet somewhat anticipated discussion on the nature of science and religion erupted. To summarize the discussion, the participants were divided into two: the advocates of the rationality and empirical-evidence-requiring-nature of science & those who harshly hammered on “science and religion equally blinds people by making them insanely faithful.” I had a terrific time listening, wondering why this subject was always exciting to discuss about, whereas topics of abortion or legal prostitution were bland and outdated, yet pitifully still did not have a concrete conclusion…. More: Jaehee Kim, Class of 2011, at KMLA 13th Wave International Avatars

This class discussion began because of Gong Ji-Won (who is a lineal descendent of Gong-Ja, a.k.a. Confucius). When we learned the etymology of the Chinese Characters behind his name (“Ji” being “Will” and “Won” being “Origin”), I posed the question to him and the class: Might there have been an “Original Will” behind the “Big Bang”? (Then again, his name could be interpretted to mean “the Origin of Will”–which would be a different question all together.) To see the results of the heated discussion that ensued, please visit the Minjok Seniors page: KMLA 13th Wave Domestic Avatars (Class of 2011).

(Carlton Johnson) Looking for a hint of some source, some germ of “right-guidance” that might be cultivated within the collective consciousness of these various masses suing for freedom–within that same collective soul that is crying out for freedom–I came across a passage from the I-Ching:

On “Inner Truth” (중부 / Jung Bu), Hexagram number 61 (out of 64)… (continue)
