Magical Majestic Magnolias
On this page you will find KMLA Domestic Students, Bound for Universities within Korea… the 16th Wave to come and leave our school’s shores… Class of 2014
A Start
Leaves are falling.
What was resolute is failing.
Disappointed about myself
.
From cold, chilly weather
Where the leaves had fallen,
Sprouts are poping out.
.
From a deep frustration,
Like a hopeful bud,
a sprout also popped out inside my mind

Letters to our Hubae !
Dear 17th wavers,
Hello to all of you! I am Moon HeeEun, one of your 16th wave seniors [Sonbae].
I am pretty sure that most of you are quite familiar with English, having considerably high TOEFL scores. However, once you enter KMLA, your new English life will begin, and you are to face challenges, such as difficulties in comprehension of English literatures or expressing your opinion clearly…. Hello Dear Hubae, Park JongMin, here.
Freshmen who newly enter KMLA must buy several books for the English class. Among all the books needed, the most important and useful book is DLS, which is Developmental Language Skills. Through this book, I have learned various English skills that are necessary for my English Language Arts activities. Students can also learn diverse things through in-class activities that are done in the English classes of KMLA. We do debates, listen to lectures, and write term papers. For me, the most memorable and challenging topics that I covered in this semester are; first, the methods of writing term papers; second, various grammatical rules; and third, the way of doing debates…. Who Are We ?
Bae YeonSoo — On the 22nd of July in 2011, the Internet was flowing with articles about a terror attack that took place in Norway. The number of casualties kept on increasing and the videos of mothers crying over their lost sons and daughters were uploaded. Soon, a portrait shot of a suspect was uploaded with the name “Anders Behring Breivik.” He was a normal 32-year-old Norwegian man, but was a right-wing extremist.
The terror conducted by this man consisted of two sequential terrorist attacks. The first was a car bomb explosion which took place in Oslo. The second attack happened in less than two hours at a summer camp on the island of Utoya. Breivik dressed as a police officer and shot the students who were participating in the camp. Later, it was revealed that a total of 77 people were killed in these two occupations. (Wiki 2011 Norway Attack)

New Beginnings — by Soyeon Jeon
‘Aaa—‘my mom says, and I open my mouth. And as if calming a baby, my mom puts a smooth and sweet rectangular chocolate into my mouth. ‘Ting’ — the elevator arrives. ‘TING’ — it closes. I bow once and turn back. Nothing is here. I went into my room desperately looking for something. It was not there. Only the silence had eaten up the whole room. A mixed scent of my mother’s perfume and shampoo lingered for a moment, then fainted. Looking around, I found my room was nice and clean. Every part of my room- the books, the clothes, and the bed- was carefully embracing my family’s love. Everything kept echoing, “It will be all right. It is hard to study alone far away from family.” I could hear my grandmothers’ old, trembling, but concerning voice from the setting… Continue
I’m Loud
by Choi HongBum
. I’m loud. It’s always easy to find me, because I’m loud. Literally, I’m loud. I have a loud voice and talk a lot. I’m very loud. I’m loud just to make myself exposed a bit more to other people, to reach somewhere, somewhere that my loudness is not loud anymore. I’m still loud.10a2
An Athletic meet at KMLA — by Hwang SooShin
On the very first day of October, KMLA held an athletic meeting in which all the students and their families, and teachers participated. How the KMLA athletic meeting was different from other atheletic meetings was that even our grandparents were invited to the event!
Of course, there weren’t many activities in which our grandparents could possibly participate, but since they could enjoy some activities (like traditional throwing arrow game) and joyfully watch their grandchildren participate in the various activities, then our grandparents were also kindly invited to the three-generations athletic meeting at KMLA.
For me, as I was going to participate in the basketball game between the 15th wavers (11th grade) and 16th wavers (10th grade) on that day, and since I would be able to meet my family after a long time, I waited desperately for the athletic meeting day to come…. Continue

On Manito and Maro by Cho MyungJu
… According to a Greek myth, t’is said that there was a god named Manito, who loved humans very much. The king among the gods, Zeus, gave him a responsiblity of managing the time of humans. One day, Manito saw a girl and an old man who were about to die of an accident. He felt so sad to see it that he moved time, so that they could survive. This sort of thing happened repeatedly, and people rarely died, thanks to Manito who manipulated time for them. Zeus found out about this fact, however, and deprived Manito of the responsiblity to stop the confusion in the world… continue . CNN Notes: African Leadership Academy (ALA)
by Kim HyunChae
Posted: December 7, 2011 in School Work
Education is essentially the future of the world. How the children are educated make a great difference for a country or continent. But in poor regions of Africa, many children are neglected and uneducated. This is a great loss for the entire continent: there may be hundreds of neglected children with the potential to be a future leader or scholar. So in order to find the young, bright minds hidden all over Africa, a new institute called African Leadership Academy (ALA) has been established…. Continue

Facebook and Teenagers:

What Facebook is doing to KMLA students
by Lee SuJin Gossip girls talk about rumors, jocks discuss sports and music, and nerds dispute over philosophical and political issues outside of school. Where can these be possible? Smart phones, tablet PCs, Wi-Fi, and social networking service enables people interact with each other everywhere, almost instantly. Social Networking Service (SNS) is an online service that is used to make social networks, and its influence is immeasurable all over the world (Gadget). For example, Egyptians’ protest against their dictator, Mubarak, first spread by Facebook. Moreover, 1 in 16 kids under age 5 has a Facebook account, and Facebook is used by more than five hundred million people in the world, becoming the most dominant SNS site. Facebook operates seventy-five languages in the world, and more than seventy-five percent of its users are not Americans. Teenagers are prominent users of Facebook, who are the most responsive to technological changes and current trends, since fall of 2005, when they were qualified to join Facebook (Kirkpatrick, 16-17). Teenagers update their status and locations instantly by utilizing their Smart phones and tablet PCs, and others comment and ‘like’ what teenagers have updated on their profile. Teenagers’ quick responses and flow of information creates Facebook a colossal social community where they gather up to be acquainted with more people. Teenagers’ Facebook phenomenon also exists in Korean Minjok Leadership Academy, where its students are probably the busiest teenagers in Korea. In fact, since KMLA society is such a small one, what happens in Facebook spreads into real life, making SNS’s effect even more immense. There are positive aspects of KMLA students’ Facebook use, such as rapid information exchange and broadening social relationship. However, some negative aspects influence KMLA students badly, interfering with their privacy and emotions. Despite its huge influence and convenience, there underlies some serious problems within Facebook in teenage society, such as KMLA, and there must be some significant measures taken to resolve these….
