Following a series of thoughtful photo opportunities that sought to portray the Russian premier as a man’s man who could destroy any animal that came before him, Putin was pictured topless astride a galloping horse, perhaps in a nod to Lady Godiva, riding through a meadow outside the town of Kyzyl in Southern Siberia. Russia’s Putin: Macho Man? by Lee Dong-Hoon
… During Putin’s eight years in office, industry grew by 76%, investments increased by 125%, and agricultural production and construction increased as well. Real incomes more than doubled and the average monthly salary increased from $80 to $640. From 2000 to 2006 the volume of consumer credit increased 45 times and the middle class grew from 8 million to 55 million. The number of people living below the poverty line decreased from 30% in 2000 to 14% in 2008. The numbers suggest magnificent progression in both economic areas and social peace. These achievement was possible as Putin changed the fundamental thoughts of economy of Russia.
According to the data, he is expected to win 60% of votes which is more than enough to be re-elected. The rate has fallen against his previous election, but it is still high compared to his opponent.
Nevertheless, the opposite side is as strong as ever. People have realized that Putin’s long term would one day bring an autocratic government to Russia…. Continue

Death Valley — photo by Digitaleye81 .… The only building we could see was a big deserted log cabin. After the cabin, my family drove for half an hour, but could not find the hotel my dad had arranged. So, our family, hardly believing that the cabin was a hotel, went all the way back to check if it really were a hotel. It was a hotel, and it was the hotel. I thought the owner of the building is very shameless, to unabashedly call the ruined construction, a hotel. Yes, it was our mistake to arrange a hotel without looking at the actual picture of it (the ad of the hotel did not provide any picture of the hotel), and just see its cheap price… More

War and Peace (More on Syria) — by Park So-Hyeon

But if we think about what happened in Bahrain or Saudi Arabia, the values of freedom and democracy are so easily weighed down by monetary interests. Most people in the Western world never heard of the uprising in Bahrain, because Bahrain is ruled by Saudi Arabia and Saudi Arabia has oil. Lots of oil. What else can we say? Look back to the winter of 2010 and you will find that the reason why there were revolutions in the Middle East in the first place were quite monetary as well. The youth were the ones who had no jobs within a recessive economy and they were the ones struck hard by the international food crisis… Continue
