“The Anthropology of Perfection . . . In Search of the Ideal”
.
This course will use film and texts (primary and secondary) to survey several major Religious and Philosophical Traditions that deal with the concept of Human Enlightenment, Perfection, Spiritual Maturity, and/or the pursuit of the Ideal Human Nature or Human Condition (individual or collectively):
Primarily a Seminar Course: Students will be expected to chose three texts relating to three different traditions–to explore what these texts and traditions have in common in articulating the goal and purpose of life and promoting the ideal of individual (and/or collective) fulfillment. We will see several movies related to the various traditions. Consistent notes (clear file and blog), active focused participation in class discussion, and a term paper will be required, as well as individual or group presentations aimed at facilitating and feeding the discussions.
What is this “Perfection”?
穩全 – 온전
“Ohn-Jeon” (Korean pronunciation) — perfect — intact, unimpaired, free from blemish, flawless, faultless, spotless, sound, whole:
“Be ye therefore perfect, as your father is in Heaven.” (—Matthew 5:48)
For the translation of this Bible verse into Korean, “Ohn-Jeon” is the choice chinese-character representation of the concept of “perfection” enjoined of all humanity by Jesus, in the conclusion of his “Sermon on the Mount.”
穩全
To be perfect — is to engender the heart of nourishing hands, above and below, working together; rooted in the firm ideal of precious, unblemished value. To so(w) seed the next generation; providing stable, steady security–toward sound, whole, intact, flawless, unimpaired progeny.

Required and Recommended Reading
In addition to the main required text, Huston Smith’s famous work The World’s Religions… all students, respectively, should in addition choose three of the following texts to “explore” – a full reading of these 3 additional texts will not be required: However, from the three extra selected texts, students will be expected to present relevant passages (of the students’ own choosing), when leading discussions for that text or tradition. (Students are not limited to the following list. While at least two books should be taken from this list, students may also choose–as a third text–some selection beyond this list.)

This course may not be suitable for students concerned about losing confidence in their own current, particular faith tradition. My own orientation: Judeo-Christian/Islamic/Buddhist/Confucian Unificationist. Nonetheless, this course is not about promoting one religion or philosophy, but about surveying the field and pursuing the integrity of various traditions that are advancing “The Ideal,” or what Plato called “The Idea of the Good.”
— Note: Subsequent to offering this course, and pursuant to this disclaimer, two books were banned from the Recommended Reading list: The Exposition of the Divine Principle [SunMyung Moon]— http://www.amazon.com/Exposition-Divine-Principle-Three-Colors/dp/897132127X/ and As a Peace-Loving Global Citizen — Reverend Sun Myung Moon — http://www.amazon.com/As-peace-loving-global-citizen/dp/B003OPC5G0/
